Apache Derby is a full functioned relational embedded database engine Java database developed by IBM and submitted to the Apache foundation in 2004. In July 2005, Derby graduated from "incubator" status and became part of the Apache DB project.
Sun has also voiced its backing for Derby and has announced that it will dedicate employees to work on the project at Apache, and that intends to bundle the database with its Java software products.
Derby is specifically designed to be embedded within other Java software products.
